A small workshop that carries a very long history. This is the phrase to start describing ‘Lokoumia of Orea Lefkara’ (delights of Nice Lefkara). The small workshop making loukoumia was started in 1895 by Mr Theodoros Kramvides. A few years later, he emigrated to Alexandria where he worked in a traditional lokoum making business. On his return back home in 1904 he resumed his business, putting in the new experience he had gained at Alexandria. With the help of his wife, Mrs Margaro, Lefkara loukoumia quickly gained reputation and in the years that followed, received three prizes at exhibitions in Larnaca (1907, 1909 and 1919). These successes urged Mr Theodoros to take part in exhibitions abroad hoping to give international recognition for his small village and Cyprus. Hence in 1925, Lefkara delights were presented at the British Royal Exhibition and receieved a prize for their taste and aroma. In fact, following this prize award, Mr Theodoros received a letter giving him the chance to put his loukoumia at the preference list of the Queen, an invitation that he failed to accept since he could not read English (the content of this letter was made known to the family 30 years later by a British journalist who happened to interview his son). Mr Theodoros received a few more awards at Salonica in 1931 and in the following years at Larnaca and Tel Aviv exhibitions.
