Liston, one of the historical coffee shops in Corfu, is located in the most traditional, busy and cosmopolitan street of the city, which was designed and began to be constructed by the Imperial French after 1807 and is a representative sample of that area. It strongly resemblances "Rue de Rivoli" in Paris, built during the same years, while today Liston is a traditional socializing point. According to one theory, the word derives from the Venetian word "lista" which denotes a wide and straight street (see "Liston de Piazza" in Saint Mark Square in Venice) whereas according to the prevalent opinion, the word derives from the word list, a kind of "register" of the nobles who had the exclusive right to enter that area after signing in the pertinent register. The personal signature of the nobles was an essential requirement for entering this area which was "forbidden ground" to ordinary people, where only the few and privileged could enjoy a walk or coffee; Today Liston continues to "subscribe" and guarantee quality to its "noble" customers.
