The Blackwell family have farmed in North Essex since the 1930s. Howard began rearing turkeys and geese in the early 1980s supplying butchers, and with these contacts then started rearing and fattening Gloucestershire Old Spots and Oxford Sandy and Blacks. This business quickly developed and The Rare Breed Meat Company was created in 1995 adding other premium brands such as Colne Valley and Salt Marsh lambs, free range Blythburgh pigs, traditional breeds of cattle, quality dry cured bacon and hams, free range ducks, venison and game when in season.
