Proud of its no-television policy, Old Blackfriars understands exactly what makes a traditional pub tick. Atmosphere counts for a lot - and the period features in a site once owned by Dominican monks are enhanced by stained glass taken from a local chapel - but this cosy bar, with its 350-year-old bare brick walls and wooden floor, is a hit because of the pride it takes in the comfort-food menu, the changing line-up of real ales, the impressive malt whisky list - and the welcome it gives to all comers. That's enough to give a rewarding visit any night of the week, but look out in particular for the Tuesday quiz - with £50 of food voucher prizes - and the Thursday Scottish music jam sessions. It's the perfect setting for a Belhaven Best or a Belhaven IPA.
