Zazus Kitchen is about people, food and fun. A local place to meet, eat, drink, debate, sit peacefully with a good book, send an email, catch up with friends, or enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine on the terrace and just be…. All day long. We are open for breakfasts, lunches and suppers. Or you can just pop in for a quick bite and a drink. The food aims to cover most of your needs throughout the day, from the simple (although we like to think there is an artful skill to making a complex dish seem effortlessly simple), to the more sophisticated choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Our chefs really enjoy taking the cooking up a notch or two. And you need to check out the coffee too, ‘Extract Roastery’ have quickly become one of the leading roasters in the country (to us anyway). In old terms, you could describe us as following the classic tradition of a French neighbourhood brasserie: local, unpretentious, informal and open all day with a good selection of drinks and decent grub for not a lot of money. But, hopefully, with a contemporary 21st century twist. “NuBraz” is how one customer described our approach. A bit too ‘In Betweeners’ for our liking, possibly “gastrocafe”, again not quite right but you get the gist. We began life as a small outpost in a strong, neighbourhood community, Stokes Croft, on the corner of Jamaica St, Bristol. We’ve since moved, for a brief period as a pop-up in Clifton for six months and then to base camp on the Gloucester Rd in Bishopston where we opened in May 2012. Being a part of a local community is a key to who we are, and what we do. So from our lovely sun trap of a terrace, we surveyed Bristol for our new expedition and decided to venture into distant unknown lands ‘south of the river’ on the borders of Bedminster and Southville, where we met a very welcoming tribe with whom we traded food and beverages for coinage and trinkets.
