The coffee conquered the rest of the world in the fifteenth century through Muslim pilgrims who went to Mecca. Thus, coffee is spreading in Yemen and throughout Arabia. Around 1960, Dutch sailors introduced the first coffee plants, originating from Moka (Yemen's port city), first to Ceylon then to India, then to all the Dutch colonies in Asia. They bring back plants from the island of Java to Europe. The coffee is grown in the greenhouses of Amsterdam Botanical Garden, in particular. Plants are offered to Louis XIV who entrusts them to the botanists of the Garden of the King, the current Garden of Plants. From there, the coffee is introduced into the West Indies colonies where France gets its supplies freely. The coffee culture then spread throughout Latin America where, until the late nineteenth century, it will be made mainly by slaves.
