GOOD QUALITY NEEDS TO BE FOSTERED WITH THE BEST PRESERVATION METHODS Owing to U.L.O. or Ultra Low Oxygen, we are able to keep apples and pears, which are both harvested in autumn, for a whole year without any loss in quality. This allows us to stock our customers with quality fruit all year round. In the picking stage, fruit is taken immediately to the cold stores where it is stored under optimum conditions. They are stacked by variety (according to differing storage conditions) in cold rooms of ±100,000 kg. Our preservation complexes have been spread out geographically in order to cool the fruit as quickly as possible (Sint-Truiden, Glabbeek, Zoutleeuw, Hannuit).Under the U.L.O. conditions, we set temperature, oxygen and CO2 levels in a balanced combination thus halting the fruit’s ageing process. Consequently, the BFV is able to store some 50 million kg. The fruit is also kept perfectly chilled between the times of supply and shipping, especially in our gigantic cold waiting stores alongside the loading bays. Apples and pears are kept separately because the ethylene in the apples would otherwise cause the pears to ripen too quickly and because the storage conditions are different for both fruits. Especially for strawberries and other soft fruits we have separate wet throughput systems that chill the fruit faster and preserve it in greater humidity. This is how we are able to guarantee that the chilling process remains unbroken.
