We visited a few restaurants on a Friday evening without reservations. Two places we had been recommended to by locals were full and we couldn't get in. Ieroglif was a short distance from our dreadful Hotel Barnaul so we went in and were happy that the Chinese-Japanese restaurant had a free table for us. The amount of dishes caugh us by surprise. Over two weeks in Russia to climb Belukha and we hadn't had this much to choose from. First order of business was to have a glass of wine. Ieroglif has a huge selection of wines and spirits to choose from. The Italian, dry red house wine turned out to be excellent. Later on I had another glass. I don't read or speak Russian, but the menu had good pictures of all the dishes. I had my Russian speaking spouse to help me with anything I couldn't figure out. The staff spoke some English. We had a few hour long dinner. I chose chicken and vegetable spring rolls along with salad of beef and cucumber with fresh chili for starters. Fresh chili was hiy after not eating anything spicy for a month! After that two main dishes: first chickling teryaki with rice, and second beef with Peking cabbage, bell peppers and onion in spicy sauce. My girlfriend had fish and vegetable salad, and salmon with tiger prawns spring rolls as her starters. For mains she chose dragon sushi. It was so good to have fresh ingredients in all dishes! In the mountains in doesn't really matter what is on the plate - you'll eat it anyway. Not the case with Ieroglif. It was a real pleasure to dine there. The staff was helpfull and happy - just the way you want the staff to be. I'd love to come here for lunch or dinner again!
