Along with Pyynikintori, the Hay Market has been a manifestation of the vitality of the town west of Tammerkoski and the countryside behind it since the late 19th century. At the time, the marketplace covering the market areas was called 'Plassi'. The products for sale were mainly food and guaranteed fresh, after all the pigs and chickens were moving on their own feet. Animals in the city also needed fuel, hay, mainly horses used as means of transport. The hay trade was such an important part of the business that the city built a separate weighing room in 1914, with the possibility of verifying the actual weight of the load by means of a mechanical weighing structure. The building was designed by architect L. Petterson. Cars as a means of transport subsequently displaced the horse and the hay trade. The Vaakahuone served a variety of uses since the 1930s. Now it has been restored from a technical point of view and is equipped with a meeting place for fine food and comfort, the Heinätori restaurant. Enjoy and stay with us!
