Ten Green Bottles was set up in January 2007 by Simon Broad and Sam Devaney, on the basis of a shared passion for wine, a shared idea of what makes a wine exceptional, and a shared disappointment in the lack of availability of those wines in the UK. Sam was living in Italy at the time, and the company started life finding and importing exciting wines that were made in such small quantities that the bigger importers weren’t interested. For a time, the main business was selling to restaurants (clients included names like The Fat Duck, The Square, Locanda Locatelli…). The idea was always to have our own bar, though, based on the enotecas we loved in Italy: small, friendly places you could have a glass of wine, some good cheese, and walk away with a bottle recommended by the owner. We couldn’t believe that no-one was doing this kind of thing in the UK, and when we opened we were one of the very first wine bar/shop establishments over here (long before all the hipsters in London started doing it!). We chose Brighton because we had both grown up close by and knew it well, and we knew this was a good place to try something a bit different! We’re thrilled our idea has been welcomed - “This is just what Brighton needed” being a common response by a customer on their first visit!
