The history of our premises dates back to 1945. In those years, the city had its urban limits on the San Carlos canal, which gave a very different view from the one we know today. It was in that precise place, in front of Avenida Tobalaba, where a small Soda Fountain was born, known in those years as “Kika”. Little by little, and with the passage of time, it managed to become an icon of the neighborhood, becoming an important meeting point for young people in the 60's. But it was in the 50's, when the German emigrant Hans Heyn, bought the premises and imposed the German stamp that characterizes it to this day. Hans, born in 1914 in the city of Ilmenau, region of Thuringia (green heart of Germany), decides to move to Chile looking for better opportunities for his family. Continuing with this tradition, and towards the end of the 90's, his family continued the business and the Tobalaba store grew. The halls are remodeled, adapting to the new demands of its loyal clientele, which at this point includes three generations of Chileans. In 2005, the second store was inaugurated, located in Nueva Providencia with Guardia Vieja, which has managed to maintain the same commitment and tradition in each of its corners. Elkika Ilmenau has witnessed the great transformations that the sector has had, such as the urbanization of the eastern sector, the arrival of the subway and the emergence of Sanhattan, the financial center of the city. Today, with 75 years of history, we can proudly say that Elkika is the oldest restaurant in the Providencia commune.
