Private chef and supperclub organiser Jeremy Cheok opens a second neighbourhood bar and kitchen – this one nestles in Opera Estate and fuses Peranakan and Vietnamese elements into Western cuisine to offer, among its mains, Asian pesto chicken noodles ($18) with a Thai basil, coriander and mint pesto inspired by Viet street food ‘bun cha’, coconut cream clams ($19), stuffed squid ($18) and a slow-cooked US angus beef ($26). And then there are waffles – get the savoury Margherita waffle ($17), stuffed with cheese and pizza sauce and topped with candied bacon ice cream and gula melaka syrup, or go for a full-blown savoury waffle treat, Slake brunch ($19), served with Spanish-style fried eggs with beef lardons, streaky bacon and roasted portobello pane grattato. The desserts here are not afterthoughts, with everything (including their ice creams) made in-house. Order the sticky date pudding ($8) served with a salted caramel ice-cream to call it a happy ending.
