The Kitchen Bar is a Belfast institution dating back to 1859 it is also Unique to Victoria Square as it is the only original pub where visitors experience a full range of drinks, home-cooked traditional food, entertainment and great craic. The original building was a women’s boarding house prior to its use as a pub. The former Empire Theatre previously stood next to the pub and actors from the theatre would drink there, often leaving behind publicity photographs, which were displayed on the walls. Charlie Chaplin would often drop in for a drink after a show. On 30th July 2004, the original building was demolished to make way for a new shopping centre development, Victoria Square. The original pub’s demolition caused considerable controversy, drawing national newspaper attention. There are few pubs capable of upping and moving around the corner without losing their renowned character and atmosphere. But that is exactly what the famous Kitchen Bar has achieved and is still packing customers in for great ale’s, live music and some good value hearty pub grub. In more recent times it has become famous for one of Belfast’s unique culinary delights its signature dish “The Paddy Pizza”, an Italian Classic with an Irish twist. Still served, the Paddy Pizza was the invention of the mother of a previous landlord and remains one of the most popular dishes served today.
