KalaValtanen has its roots in western Finnish professional fishing in the Luvia archipelago. The fishermen know seven generations of fishermen, one of which travels to the Brändö archipelago of Åland. Our skills in fishing, fish farming and fish processing have been passed down from one decade to the next. In the 19th century, the archipelago was home to subsistence fishing, seal hunting and farming. At the turn of the 20th century, herring driftnets or pelagic fishing on the high seas became more common. Gradually herring trap fishing formed the basis of KalaValtanen's professional fishing. Breastfeeding with traps, hooks and nets was widely caught alongside. The fish were sold to fish loggers, Åland bumpers and residents of the province directly from the boat. The challenges of the 1980s, such as the regulation of fishing and the increase in the number of seals, require new, more distant future solutions for the industry. In 1987 we started rainbow trout farming, and in the early 2000s we specialized in pig farming. Luvian Lampoori still serves as a base for the cultivation of Finnish whitefish and rainbow trout. Thanks to a good cooperation network, we are able to bring to the market clean and safe products from both Finland and the world. Our new factory in Honkaluoto, Pori, offers energy-efficient and hygienic facilities for a wide range of products.
